In der ersten Austauschwoche verbrachte die deutsch-amerikanische Austauschgruppe viel Zeit damit sich kennen zu lernen und die Umgebung zu erkunden.
Nach einer Stadtführung der amerikanischen Gruppe am Vormittag trafen sich dann alle Schüler, Gastfamilien und Lehrer am Montagabend zum traditionellen Grillen an der Burg Plesse. Am Dienstag begannen die amerikanische Schülerinnen und Schüler dann am Unterricht ihrer Partner teilzunehmen und ihre Präsentationen in verschiedenen Englischstunden zu halten. Beim selbstorganisierten Sportturnier am Nachmittag mit den Disziplinen Basketball, Fußball und Speedball stand der Spaßfaktor im Mittelpunkt und es konnte am Ende kein eindeutiger Sieger ermittelt werden.
Am Donnerstag ging es mit der Bahn in die Autostadt nach Wolfsburg, wo vor allem die Werkstour-Führung interessante Einblicke in die Produktion vermittelte. Zu einer besonderen Herausforderung wurde die Bahnfahrt mit 55 Personen incl. Zugwechsel, die von allen gemeistert wurde.
Hier einige erste Eindrücke der amerikanischen Gäste von Göttingen:
Ally: „The first thing I noticed about Germany is how much more outdoors-y Germans are compared to Americans.“
Srish:”People here seem very independent. (…) Kids don’t rely on their parents to do things for them, because they are able to go out and do it themselves.”
Shaun: “I noticed that biking is a form of transportation and people don’t do it as exercise.”
Charles: ”…fascinating landscape…!”
James: “Everything seems smaller compared to America: smaller roads, cars, beds, houses, etc."
Edwin: “… a very eco-friendly country. Although everything seems a lot smaller than in America it is all a lot cozier.”
Annalyn: “I fall in love with Germany more and more every time I see a field of sunflowers. This is a novelty to Americans.”
Laine: “The fashion here is very specific. Everyone wears jeans and sneakers whereas in America we also wear shorts and sandals.”
Luca: “In Göttingen the use of chalkboards (Tafeln) is new for me. The last time I had a chalkboard in my classroom was in first grade. In America we use whiteboards in every classroom and sometimes use a smart board.”
